The Obama administration has been defending the practice which is clearly unconstitutional. However, with the Patriot Act in effect, the Bill of Rights in the US Constitution is basically null and void so if you thought you had any rights you had better think again. He eventually plans to replace his cooks with robots too. Maybe our society is going through growing pains...as more and more people become unemployed, the automated workplaces continue to grow. Companies are running with constantly shrinking staffs--When is the last time you called your bank and got a human on the phone? We need humans on the phone! Some would say it is a shame to put humans out of work, but I think it is a good thing (as long as it isn't a phone operator position). Why shouldn't we finally start to allow our technology to work for us? Why shouldn't we allow each and every human to benefit from the resources we have been squandering in name of greed? Why shouldn't we allow our technology to set people free, instead of using it to control a displaced work force for the benefit if the super-wealthy?

Maybe companies will start hiring people for jobs where we really want to deal with a humans and start leaving the crap jobs for robots--it's about time, I say! I hated being a waiter! Now, I understand that some people may enjoy waiting tables, and I am sure the demand for human waiters will still be there for those who want to do the job and those who like to receive the service of another human being. And, maybe they will start to be compensated in a way that is more appropriate for what has been called one of the most stressful professions that a person can have.

In my opinion, there is no reason why we shouldn't all be living like kings with the technology we have...too many greedy people have been screwing the poor and enjoying the fruits of their labor! People shouldn't have to do menial tasks anymore unless they want to, and if they do, they should be compensated fairly.

One would probably have to be stupid to buy this book, but it is not always a bad idea to know what kind of twisted reasoning the right is using to come to their bizarre philosophical conclusions...

One wonders who is more virtuous...is it they poor who act out of the purity and innocence of nature, or the wealthy, who act out of greed and cunning? Is this is the natural order of things? THE CLASH, one of my very favorite bands, released the album SANDINISTA, on December 12, 1980. They had the ability to make political statements that were at the same time very entertaining and listenable. The message of this song is just as true today as it was when it was made. Why do people continue to believe the lies they are fed by the American War Machine?

When you are watching the news on television, try to read between the lines and figure out the real reason why the particular story you are seeing has been chosen for air-time. News shows make their money the same way any other television program does--through advertising dollars. They are trying to sell you something indirectly. There are great forces at work behind every story you are fed.

For example, that is why we heard nothing about what a terrible man Saddam Hussein was, back when the U.S. set him up as the leader of Iraq. It wasn't until he stopped doing what he was told by his masters in the United States and Great Britian that we started to hear stories about how he was violating human rights, killing his own people, etc.

That is why I love the internet. It allows people to share stories more freely and with less corporate and political interference from the powers that be.

From my observations in Golden Gate Park, the original ideals of the hippie movement have been lost by most of the people you find there today. Instead of peace, love and sharing, I found many of the people I have met down there to be belligerent, selfish and ignorant. This old documentary features an interview with some of the original members of The Grateful Dead, and includes footage of a free concert that they gave at Hippy Hill. The band talks about some of their ideals and their hopes for a brighter future. Implicit is the hope of ending war, by enlightening people with LSD, music and love. You can see a more contemporary video of the hippy hill area of Golden Gate Park, that I filmed myself on April 20, 2010, at the annual 420 celebration here: 420 AT HIPPIE HILL. A popular band performs near the hill; their message echoes that of The Grateful Dead, but I fear that the positive message is lost to most of the crowd.

I was sorry to find that the original hippie culture that I was brought up in, has degenerated to such a pathetic and hopeless state in the area where it had it's beginnings. If we can't derive hope from our subculture, then where will the change that we so desperately need come from? Certainly not our mainstream society which is far more preoccupied with religious intolerance, war and greed.

I'm not gay, but I do think it should go without saying that a person should be allowed to marry whomever they choose. Until the right-wing, religious fanatics in this country stop trying to control everybody else and force their “morals” down the throat of the country, there can be no real freedom in the United States. I don't see how that is really possible, since he is dead. Oscar Grant was shot to death in an altercation with police in a BART station, in Oakland. The trial of the officer accused of wrongfully shooting him is already in progress; the officer says he drew his fire-arm accidentally while he was reaching for his Tazer to use on the victim. I spend a lot of time burning on the military and our current foreign policies. This Memorial Day weekend, I would like to pay my respect to those members of our military who have put themselves in harms way to protect the innocent and those who cannot defend themselves. I do recognize that there have been in the past, as there will be in the future, times when force is necessary and just. Those who put their own lives on the line for a truly just and noble cause, deserve great respect and gratitude.

When people ask me, "Do you support our troops?" I say yes, of course, I support our troops like I support every human being. That doesn't mean, and shouldn't be translated to mean, that I support every action they take part in under our flag. For in my mind, blind patriotism is exactly what our founding fathers were fighting against.

Let us not forget that the original freedom fighters of the American Revolution were considered to be terrorists by the British Crown, against which they rebelled. The nobility of their sacrifice is even greater in my mind, because in addition to protecting their families and loved ones (which I hope any able bodied man would do) they fought for a principle. The principle of the freedom from tyranny imposed by an unjust government.

Marijuana prohibition has been a total failure and is perhaps this country's greatest mistake. Not only has it created criminals out of nearly a third of the country's populace, it costs our society billions of dollars every year, creates a strain on our prison system, and has little or no effect on marijuana use in the US. In some cases, prosecuting marijuana use has turned non-violent, middle class kids into violent and unpredictable, career criminals. Once a person has a criminal conviction on their record, they are far less likely to find a good job and become a useful member of society. Other countries with more liberal drug laws have much lower rates of drug addiction among their people.

I got a tip off of a demonstration down at San Francisco State University, so I headed down to cover the event. I was shocked to see police and students clashing with each other so violently. In my opinion these police officers were interfering with these kids' right to demonstrate peacefully. I thought this was pretty neat! I sure wish they had those back when I was quitting smoking...

I gave up cigarettes back in 2003 and I am pretty sensitive to cigarette smoke now. When a friend of mine who was visiting took out one of these devices and started pulling away at it in my apartment, I was pleasantly surprised to learn I couldn't detect any smell at all. He said he was very happy that it didn't threaten his health like regular cigarettes, and in fact he didn't miss smoking at all!

This is a great piece of Cold War history--these army officers on LSD clearly cannot perform the essential duties for killing people. No wonder the government and military establishment was so terrified of the drug at the time.

While I know people can have a lot of fun with acid, I do think it should be used with great caution. This really bums me out. Apparently this young mother will serve two years in federal prison for non-violent LSD charges.

First of all, taking LSD to a rainbow gathering is like bringing beer to Oktoberfest. This woman is certainly no danger to others--she should be released and her cell given to some violent criminal.

The Rainbow family exercises the right to peaceably assemble on public lands in an annual annual event which culminates in a silent prayer for world peace on the morning of July 4th.

Every year they must endure harassment by local, state, and federal law enforcement and park rangers, while trying to get to and from the gathering site. Mounted patrols often go through the area looking for people to arrest on drug charges. At last year's Wyoming event it was reported that there was a confrontation between park rangers and rainbows. It was reported that some rainbows threw rocks and sticks at the armed patrols, but few rainbows believe it.

It appears that the Mexican government has decriminalized possession of small amounts of marijuana and other drugs such as LSD, heroin and amphetamine.

I have long believed that any laws which function to dictate what a person chooses to do with his or her own body are unconstitutional on their face and contrary to the principles of freedom and justice. I applaud Mexico for taking this brave stance on civil rights, against extreme pressure from the US government. It is high time we start treating drug addiction as a disease, not as a crime.

Naturally, being the outspoken supporter of civil freedom that I am, and being so close to Market Street, I would be remiss in my duties were I not to give my faithful readers a little peek of the Gay Pride Celebrations in San Francisco.

Because Proposition 8, a sneaky ballot bill designed to quash the gay marriage movement in California, was pushed through by a bunch of activist, right-wing religious fanatics, an unprecedented number of people showed up to support the basic human right of people to marry whomever they choose. In my humble opinion, the Federal Reserve Act was and is the biggest continuing rip-off in the history of the world. Naturally, I use web-crawlers to search out items of interest on a variety of subjects. Recent results for keywords "CIA" and "LSD" have been overlapping as recently declassified documents have revealed CIA involvement in mind control and interrogation techniques, involving LSD and other dangerous, enigmatic substances. Strangely, many of these articles seem to be originating in Britian. I found this article by Hugh Turley to be particularly interesting. Also, here is a link to the Frank Olson Legacy Project. Apparently, Frank Olson was involved in the CIA's LSD project and died under mysterious circumstances. His son put the site together and is working to shed more light on the subject.

I was driving down Haight Street the other day, and coming in the opposite direction was the Further Bus with Ken Kesey standing on the top-deck in a psychedelic suit. I honked my horn and flashed the piece sign as they went by, and for a brief moment I met eyes with Mr. Kesey.

This morning I found this article on CIA experiments with LSD, which included a video with some great old footage of the Merry Pranksters: Kesey discusses how government experimentation with LSD ultimately led to its introduction into the subculture. Another article that I found seems to corraborate that the government used people as "lab rats" for experimentation with all kinds of dangerous substances such as nerve agents and other poisons.

Since I am currently unemployed, I was able to attend San Francisco's 420 celebration at Golden Gate park. There was much smoking and a good time was had by all. There was no violence, but the cops did make a brief appearance in a lone patrol car; all they did was loudly say "Knock it off!" on the loudspeaker; everyone laughed, and then they drove away. Montana Democrat Introduces Bill to Decriminalize Marijuana

Democratic Rep. Brady Wiseman, of Bozeman, Montana, has introduced a bill which would reduce the punishment for possession of less than thirty grams of marijuana to a fine of $50. Montana's current punishment for possession in that amount is a fine of $500 and up to six months of imprisonment.

Naturally, law enforcement groups are against the measure--they get a lot of funding from the federal government for arresting and prosecuting non-violent drug offenders.

According to this articles in the LA Times, the DEA will (for the time being) discontinue its raids on California Medical Marijuana Dispensaries. It is about time, but as the article points out, our country still has much to do in regards to reform of its drug laws. Too long have we put our children in jail to fend for themselves with hardened criminals. How many rapists must be set free to make room for the tens of thousands of non-violent drug offenders who are serving years in our prisons for no more than the possession of a little grass?

Also, more good news for civil rights--the City of Palm Springs has just approved a plan for the opening of two medical marijuana centers. See the article here.

Yesterday I had the opportunity to take part in the drawing process for the raffle of a 2.1 million dollar dream home with Community Action of Marin. It interesting and exciting to see how it all works; I will definitely be donating more time to them. They have a lot of programs designed to help families in need. There were 330 winners of runner up prizes who all got a chance to win the final grand prize. One person was present to accept a $1000 prize. It is not disgraceful for an athlete to smoke pot. Grass is not a "performance enhancing drug" such as steroids. If anything, the photo of Michael Phelps with a bong only made him more human and thus more likable in my book. I was however, a little disappointed by his hast to apologize for his behavior.

When will we stop punishing people for being human? Pot has been a part of civilization for as long as civilization itself.

As I looked on, I imagined you traveling the environs in search of metaphors for that which has been such a personal part of your life experience. The narrative you include makes that clear in a intimately touching fashion, something which I know takes much courage, not only confront, but to express to others...
This last Thanksgiving I recalled an improvised lunch we managed to put together among friends some 22 or 23 years ago in Santa. It was a moment in time when our birth family's realities were put aside in order to celebrate our chosen family's needs. We came together in communion and celebration of that which we have found along our lives' paths. Today, I see you are still celebrating and honoring that which God/Goddess places in your new path up 'yonder. I applaud you for it, Amigo Dave.

Green Goo in the Money Machine ( oil from algae )

Hello all. My post is about the current state of the world due to pollution, global warming, international corporations, unemployment and chronic shortages of gasoline and one possible solution that gets at the roots of all of these.
I first heard of algae as a source of energy on the Discovery Science Channel. The fact that it was being showcased there gives me hope that this new technology may sometime in the near future become reality. I have always been an avid follower of science. I have several times been disappointed to see good technology be used to reinforce the status quo. My best hope is that this technology I am going to discuss is used for the betterment of all people everywhere and that it helps to share the wealth of the petroleum industry with more working class people as it is developed. I haven't fully researched everyone involved in this project but I know for sure that a group named Sapphire Energy , www.sapphireenergy.com , is at the lead of this development and that there are several think tank organizations and finance organizations involved and I want to credit them all with their work now. Having said that I want to list the multitude of advantages this new industry has over fossil fuels and how it could change the face of the global political scene for the better in a hurry should it be developed to it's full potential. Algae. Why on earth could it be algae? As we move away from fossil fuel towards renewable energy sources several faults immediately emerge. If we try to use ethanol for a replacement energy source it quickly becomes obvious that major changes have to be made to infrastructure to handle the ethanol. The primary feedstock for ethanol, corn, is currently used to produce food and thus using these crops to produce fuel in turn causes food to be displaced from the mouths of hungry people. Also using corn to produce ethanol is not very efficient and uses land that is already under cultivation. Other alternatives such as switchgrass and plants with oil bearing seeds either don't yield the proper product or take up land that is already used for something else. Algae does none of these things. Matter of fact the method that has been proposed to grow the algaeal colonies could be located in the high desert of eastern California or on the site of an abandoned strip mine in Appalachia. It can literally be grown anywhere there is sunlight and it is warm enough to not freeze. Imagine a crop that yields 50% of its biomass in the form of oil that is chemically equivalent to light sweet crude and low sulpher to boot. It can be used in the oil refineries we already have and the end product is gasoline, not biodiesel. You grow it and extract the oil and with no further modification it is ready to send to the refinery and presto you can make gasoline from it directly. It really spurs my imagination! Imagine; replaceable , high grade crude oil that is produced in the United States. Imagine everyone that is here regardless of their emigration status being able to work building the production facilities or in support industries that make the components. Imagine a fuel production process that REMOVES CO2 from the air as it produces fuel. Imagine OPEC being forced to halt fossil fuel production for good because now we can have a closed loop in the carbon cycle. Yep, you read that right, we may be able in just the next few years to not only not care when OPEC lowers production but actually be in a position to BAN the use of fossil fuels all together. We have enough CO2 in the atmosphere already to more than supply the needs of the algae and once the system is in place we would have capped the release of CO2 forever as the algae absorbs it from the atmosphere as it grows and we release it for recycling as it is used. Algae uses more kinds of pollution during it's growth cycle than just CO2. It also biodegrades many of the pollutants that are found in sewage as well. Just imagine a new world! It blows my mind. A technology that makes as much sense in the US as it would in China. A technology that allows us to have all the fuel we want without fear of polluting the atmosphere and that uses the pollution we generate to grow. Imagine putting the evil, propped up governments of the middle east back down where they belong on the world stage. No more money for countries that stab us in the back with it. It seems like a dream come true. At any rate check out oil from algae and Sapphire here on the web and draw your own conclusions. I don't know about you but I'm tired of hearing the tired old OPEC song and I also want the world to be able to overcome global warming and hunger and war, not to mention seeing the US economy back in better shape. Thanks Dave for letting me share this and thanks anyone that took the time to read it. Plant a seed. Oh yeah and one more thing, algae makes oxygen as a by product as it is photosynthetic!

homeless (?) people

I have worked for Sharing and Caring in a small Florida city and have found that 90% of the people that came in and got free food, clothes and a shower were repeats and usually were passing thru to find a warmer climate or police that ignored their panhandling, drinking, boozing and drug habits. IN other words, they were using the system to enjoy their bummy lifestyles. Most here live under the bridges and have not worked for months or years and don't intend to work but continue their ways until they die. Some are even military vets that have pensions or other means of support but abuse alcohol, drugs and always have cigarettes to burn. About 10% are truly needed without work and want to improve but don't have the qualifications or education to get a decent job --- those are the truly needy.

Anarchists and the Love of Anonymity

I suspect that whether they know it or not, a good portion of my readers are anarchists. I realize that people have different ideas about what the word "anarchy" means. To me, anarchy is the belief and practice that things will work out the way they are supposed to without one person telling another what they should or should not do. I do understand the necessity of a civil police force: Not only to occupy those who could as a group become a social problem, but also to restrain and isolate people who are dangerous to others or destructive of others' property.

An anarchist necessarily believes in free speech, because free communications allow groups reach concensus and from societal norms. Although, I do like to know who is posting on my pages, I have always had a distaste for these blogs and sites that force you to divulge a lot of information about yourself if you want to post your opinion. I believe it to be contrary to that part of the constitution that protects the right of a free press. Of course I will remove hateful, racist, or obscene entries from my pages, but I hate to do even that and I strongly believe in the individual's right to anonymous self-expression.

At the presidential debates they gave the audience little hand-held devices to moniter their reactions to what the candidates were saying. I noticed that generally the three little lines came together when Obama spoke, and they fell apart when McKain spoke. I also noticed that Mckain had trouble looking Obama in the eyes, even when Obama was gazing right at him. From his speech, it appears that McKain wants to invade Iran. Send a Warrior if you want to make war,and Peacemaker if you want to make peace...

Massachusettes Voters Decriminalize Marijuana

On November 4th, 2008, the voters in the State of Massachusetts approved a ballot initiative to decriminalize possession of less than one ounce of marijuana. Once again Massachusetts takes the lead on civil rights issues. This will not only solve overcrowding in their prisons, it will also free law enforcement to focus efforts more on victim related, burglaries, robberies, and other violent crimes.

Marijuana prohibition has been a total failure and is perhaps this country's greatest mistake. Not only has it created criminals out of nearly a third of the country's populace, it costs our society billions of dollars every year, creates a strain on our prison system, and has little or no effect on marijuana use in the US. In some cases, prosecuting marijuana use has turned non-violent, middle class kids into violent and unpredictable, career criminals. Once a person has a criminal conviction on their record, they are far less likely to find a good job and become a useful member of society. Other countries with more liberal drug laws have much lower rates of drug addiction among their people.

Interestingly, marijuana prohibition only increases the number of professional drug dealers, because if it wasn't illegal for a person to grow it they would have little need to buy it from anyone else: Legalizing marijuana cultivation would make it nearly impossible for anyone to make a living selling pot. This is probably not going to happen, because although government is somewhat willing to decriminalize possession, they are very unlikely to allow cultivation. Otherwise, how would they be able to tax it? If marijuana is ever decriminalized, it will probably be controlled much like alcohol is--certain purveyors will be granted licenses at great expense; sin-taxes will be implemented; and the industry will be heavily regulated.

In the meantime, it might be a good idea to go to Massachusetts if you feel like burning a fatty.

Adding Video to Your Blog or Website

Add Video to Your Blog or Website

It takes a little time at first but once you start to get the hang of it, it is not difficult to upload videos to your blog or website.

First, you will need a video camera or a web-cam. If you have a video camera, you will have to upload your videos to your computer (see the owner's manual for instructions on how to do this). Most web-cams will automatically save your vidoes to a "Video" folder on your computer's hard-drive.

On the bottom-right side of your video-window you will find link labeled "Get Code," or something like that. The code is in HTML which is a code used for adding content to web-pages. If you don't see such a link you will have to do what I do--create an account with YouTube.com, and upload your video there. All YouTube vidoes have the "Get Code" link on the right side of the video-window. Click the link and copy the code. Now go to your blog or web-page and past the link into your HTML-friendly page or widget. Some web-hosting software will have a special button at the top of the editor that looks like a little cog or sprocket--some of them use other icons. If this is the case, click on the icon and then paste the code into the editor. If you are working with a basic HTML page you should be able to just past it right to the page without using the special button (other codes must then be used for proper placement within the page).

Obama Wins!

Finally, it appears that the reign of the Neo-cons is over! Hopefully, this is the beginning of a new era for the United States and the rest of the world. May the forces of darkness quake in fear! May peace prevail upon the planet. Perhaps, we can restore our tarnished image. Perhaps, we can once again hold our heads high and proudly say we are Americans!

The Democrats share a lot of the blame for the illegal and immoral war that is still raging across the planet; the fiscal policies that have led to the financial crisis effecting the world's markets; the assault on the US Constitution and the civil rights it was designed to protect; and, the damage to the environment that could ultimately lead to the extinction of many species of plants and animals, including humans.
Because, I wanted to send a message to the Democrats and I knew that my vote would not effect the outcome of the election in California, I voted my conscious in this election. I voted Green. Nevertheless I am glad that the Democrats won, and I hope that President Obama is not as centrist as he pretends to be.

May the world forgive us for the crimes of the Bush administration and their supporters! May the Iraqi people and the rest of the middle-eastern countries forgive us for the war-crimes of Bush, Cheney, and the Republican party.

Is Nuclear Power Really Safe?

Recently, I have heard a lot of conservatives talking about how "safe" nuclear power is. Is it possible that they don't remember the nuclear-meltdown that is still affecting the Town of Chernobyl? They don't remember the Three-Mile Island debacle? Can it be that they never head about what happened in Japan a number of years back? Nuclear power is not safe--it has never been, and never will be safe to use on Earth, because there is no way to dispose of the radioactive waste which results from nuclear fission.
However, nuclear power could be safely used in space. Space is already radioactive, so there would be no harm from the radioactive by-products that result from generating nuclear power in space. Nuclear waste could be fired out of the solar-system or into the Sun, and it wouldn't hurt anybody. The energy generated by nuclear reactors (or solar panels) in space could then be be transmitted to a receiving station on Earth, via microwave. The result would be clean, cheap, and plentiful energy for the entire planet.

Don't Hesitate to Greet Someone You Recognize

Not long after settling in Novato, I was riding my bike around one day in San Francisco. While I was waiting at an interesection for the traffic light to change, I was approached by a young prostitute. She walked up to me and said her name was Jennifer. She was not very attractive and there was a sense of desperation about her; she asked if I "wanted to party." I've never paid for sex before, and I refused her advances. She seemed dissapointed--said she was hungry. I was trying to be polite, and told her I didn't have any money.
About a month later, I was walking around the city looking for work and I ran into her again. I was waiting to cross the street when I was startled by a loud, sharp noise--it sounded like an explosion. I looked to my right and there was Jennifer again. She looked better now, clean and happy--we looked each other straight in the eyes and I recognized her immediately--I don't think she recognized me, though. It took me a few moments to remember where I knew her from and, as I was already almost across the street, I didn't speak to her. I was truly shocked at running into this girl twice within a month in the immense metropolitan area of San Francisco. When I got to the opposite corner I turned around and looked at her again; we gazed at each other momentarily. She was trying, but I don't think she figured out that I was the man that she had propositioned weeks before, because now I was wearing a suit and tie. She was looking to turn a trick and I think she got scared. Maybe she thought I was a cop, or maybe she was just trying to figure out where she had met me before. I walked away and continued my search for a good noodle-house. While eating my noodle-soup in a little Thai place I had found, I made up my mind that I would go look for her and call her by name. I was fascinated; I wanted to tell her I was a friend, but when I got back to the corner where I had seen her, she was gone. I was surprised at my own sense of disappointment.
Later I was riding a bus through the city, trying to get back to Marin. I sat next to a man that reminded me of a guy I had met on the plaza in Santa Fe, New Mexico, named John. People always had thought of him as retarded, because it seemed like he was. Actually I thought of him as more of an idiot-savant--often I would chat with him on the plaza, and we were friends. He spoke to me on the bus as if he had known me for years. He followed me when I reached my stop. I was having trouble finding my way back to the the Golden-Gate to catch a bus back to Marin and, as I sought a place to catch another bus that would get me where I was going, he followed me further. He spoke to me in such a familiar way, that I became concerned he would try to follow me home. We got on the next bus together and rode for awhile. He kept staring at me as if he was waiting for me to recognize him. Then he suddenly got off the bus. As the bus was pullling away, he turned and stared into my eyes from the sidwalk. Now as I write this, I believe it really was my friend John, who was sitting next to me on the bus. I wished I had realized it sooner. I saw him again a few weeks later, but again, I didn't realize it until it was too late. I turned and ran back down the sidewalk, but he was gone again.
